[SOLVED, sort of] Scroll Speed

Postby codefenix » Fri Feb 17, 2012 3:55 am

I've noticed since doing a clean Lubuntu 11.10 install, my list scroll speed is very slow and choppy. If I hold the joystick down (down arrow), several items are skipped over before stopping on something. In Xubuntu the scroll speed was very fast and smooth.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to remedy the speed? I'm using the most recent WahCade.

EDIT - Something else I forgot to mention that is also noticeably slower since the clean Lubuntu install, is the time it takes for the control viewer and history viewer to pop up. It seems like it's taking a long time to parse through the controls.ini or history.dat file before it finally presents the viewer. There was almost no lag before under Xubuntu.

I do not seem to have these problems on Lubuntu.
I am still at 11.04, scrolling is fast enough for me, even on my old hardware.
I did install the binary nvidia driver.

I upgraded to Lubuntu 12.04. The list scroll speed is now nice and quick like it should be. Not sure why.

Good.
I have set up a test system with Lubuntu 12.04, see how wahcade and mame works before i upgrade my cab's os.

Since you're considering upgrading, I'll add this. My video card is an nVidia GeForce fx5200. With the latest Xorg in *Ubuntu 12.04, this card is no longer supported. Therefore nvidia-config no longer works, nor can I install any "additional drivers" through the applications menu. Instead, "nouveau" drivers are installed by default, and they suck (i.e.: bad performance, no config options, etc.). As I understand, this is the case for many older nVidia cards, so consider yourself warned.

Fortunately, there is a workaround posted on Ubuntu Forms (see here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1965671), which involves reverting back to the 11.10 version of Xorg. I did it and everything is working better than ever.

Thanks for the tip.
I also still have a Fx5200 in my cab, so I'll have to use this workaround, or find a newer card for my cab.

After some consideration, i decided to leave my cab's os at Lubuntu 11.04.
It works well enough for now.
Sometime in the future i will upgrade my hardware to a newer all in one solution, and install the newest Lubuntu.
