Advanced MAME:

Advanced MAME is or rather was the flavor of MAME for many who wished to have "total" control over the arcade experience. It permits the user to control video modes, sound modes, graphic effects, and even supports the real arcade monitors!

UbuntuMAME - External site tutorial on how to setup Advanced MAME using Advanced MAME and Advanced Menu on Ubuntu.

Please note that Advanced MAME has not been updated since MAME v0.106. What does that mean for you? It means that romsets (games) after around 1997 stopped getting updated for it and new romsets stopped being added to it. So if you are only interested in trying romsets pre-1997 it will most likely work just fine. Anything that has been added or updated since then will have a good chance of working but may work parrtially or may not work at all.

SDLMAME is the newest version of MAME on Linux. It is based on the SDL (Simple DirectMedia Layer) The SDL website describes it as a "cross-platform multimedia library designed to provide fast access to the graphics frame-buffer and audio device". If you want to stay up to date and sometimes on the bleeding edge SDLMAME is for you.

It is a fast cross-platform emulator with an active support team that has been updating at semi-regular intervals for a few years now. While it is not in the Ubuntu Repos yet it may someday get there.

SDLMame is probably the better choice for most new users. Please see the post on SDLMAME.
